about

“Cruel Optimist” is the title track from the debut full-length by Worriers. On these songs, Lauren (joined by guitarist Rachel Rubino, drummer Mikey Erg, and bassist Tim Burke) sounds more focused than ever on her lyrics. These songs are smart and critical, reflecting on the sorts of feminist politics that Lauren has spent years of her life exploring through visual art and organizing. The title of the record refers to Lauren Berlant’s term “Cruel Optimism”, the idea that “something you desire might actually be an obstacle to your flourishing.” It comes through in the title track, when Lauren sings, “What doesn’t kill you, just makes you a mess / but no one ever wants to tell you.”
